Blue Shield Family General Practice is an accredited teaching practice through RACGP. Full time and part time GP registars are part of our team.

We aim to provide personalised care with holistic approach. We have special interest in prevention, herbal and drug interactions, women’s health and children’s well being.

We operate on appointment basis Monday to Friday and provide after hours care if requested. We always prioritise urgent medical cases and try to accommodate our patient’s need to the best of our knowledge and abilities. In our practice a Registered Nurse is employed to triage patients who present by appointment or on walk in basis, facilitating preventative care, provided patient permission is granted. We are located opposite St George hospital  Kensington street Entrance. Emergency Department is located in Gray Street.

Our mission is to provide the highest standard of patient care whilist incorporating a holistic approach towards diagnosis and management of illness.

We are commited to promoting health, wellbeing and disease prevention to patients, We do not discriminate in the provision of excellent care and aim to treat all patients with dignity and respect.

Dr Ata Kichkin

General Practitioner

Dr Atanaska Kichkin (MBBS University of New South Wales 1995, MD Medical Academy Bulgaria 1985) is a Fellow of RACGP (Royal Australian College of General Practitioners), who completed her fellowship degree through the Royal College of General Practitioners in 2002.Dr Kichkin facilitates a holistic, personalised approach to patient care and is well-known for her patient-centred, family-orientated expertise within the ST George Area of Sydney for the last 18 years.
Dr Kichkin is a well-established educator within her field and actively supervises accredited General Practitioner registrars and Medical Students undertaking their studies at Sydney University.

Dr Kichkin Values continuous professional development and has completed a number of post graduate courses, which include early management of severe trauma (Royal Australian College of Surgeons 2001), herbal and nutritional medicine (Swinburne University Melbourne). Dr kichkin engages in the latest professional research and education through courses offered by the Royal Australia College of General Practitioners.
Dr Kichkin Participates in Antenatal shared Care Programme and is a Yellow Fever immunisation Provider.

Dr Vandana Pala

General Practitioner

Dr Vandana Pala is a fellow of RACGP and Accredited GP Registrars Supervisor and actively participating in teaching of Medical Students through Sydney University – school of medicine has special interest in women’s health plus Antenatal Shared Care Programme, children’s health, ongoing management of chronic conditions, preventative medicine, holistic health, travel medicine, including yellow fever immunisation. Dr Pala has great passion to teach & motivate all her patients, medical students & GP Registrars.

Dr Jonathan Barel

General Practitioner

Dr Barel graduated from the University of Tasmania before completing his residency at Royal North Shore Hospital. He is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and an active member of the fertility society if Australia and New Zealand. He took on a specialty training program in Canberra Hospital before choosing his career in general practice. Compassionate, attentive and patient-focused, he strives to achieve the best outcomes for his patients and community. He has a keen interest in chronic disease management, men’s health and family planning.

Fee and Appointment


The Surgery operates on an appointment based system. Walk-in presentation can be seen too, please contact our friendly Administrative Staff for further advice

All consultations are mixed billing of all consults. 

Dear patients,
Please be advised that due to the current economic climate with Medicare
rebates not substantially indexed for the past 30 years it is no longer financially
viable to bulk bill all patients at all times.
From 1 September 2023, all consultations with Dr Ata Kichkin, Dr Jonathan Barel
and Dr Pala will incur private fees except for:

  •  Patients with pensioner’s card
  •  Patients with health care card
  •  Patients under disability pension
  •  Patients under 16 years old
  •  Patients with pressing financial circumstances.Please discuss billing
    with your doctor, and we are willing to accommodate.

For this above matter, please present your health care card/pensioner so we
can continue to bulk bill you.
Dr Kichkin will personally inform her long-term patients with complex and
chronic medical conditions about the coming fees.
